Draw and select

Pick a shape or frame tool in the Toolbox and drag on the page. The Selection tool (V, black arrow) selects whole objects; the Direct Selection tool (A, white arrow) selects points and content.

Arrange, group, lock

Object ▸ Arrange changes the stacking order (Bring To Front Ctrl+Shift+], Send To Back Ctrl+Shift+[); Object ▸ Group (Ctrl+G), Ungroup (Ctrl+Shift+G), Lock (Ctrl+L) and Hide Selection (Ctrl+3) are in the Object menu, with Unlock All (Ctrl+Alt+L) and Show All (Ctrl+Alt+3) to undo the last two. Object ▸ Pathfinder combines shapes.

Layers

Window ▸ Layers (F7): the “+” creates a layer, double-click a layer for its options, click the eye and lock columns to hide or lock it.

Tables

Table ▸ Create Table… (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+T). Insert, delete, merge and split cells from the Table menu; drag a border to resize rows and columns. Table ▸ Table Options… (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+B) sets the rows, columns, borders and fills of the table; Window ▸ Type & Tables ▸ Table (Shift+F9) sets the sizes of the selected rows and columns.
