What Montage Pro for Mac sends, when, and to whom. The short version: Montage Pro edits your films on your Mac. It talks to the network only for the things listed here — the feedback chat when you send a message, Generate with your own Google key, the searches of Music & Sounds, your own iCloud if you turn it on, and the update check of the direct-download copy. There is no account of ours, no analytics, no advertising, no tracker and no third-party SDK that collects data. Your footage, music and pictures are not uploaded, except what you attach to a feedback message or give to Generate, and the small previews that travel with your projects when you turn iCloud on.
Effective 26 October 2026 · applies to Montage Pro for Mac version 0.2.0 and later, both the copy downloaded from this site and the copy installed from the Mac App Store.
Every network connection the app can make, and what triggers it. Nothing else leaves your Mac: Montage Pro has no analytics, advertising or tracking code and no third-party SDK that collects data, and it asks for no account.
| Feature | When | What is sent | To whom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feedback chat | Only when you send a message | Your message and the files you attach; the app version and build, the macOS version, your language and region, the size of your screen, your Mac’s name, the name and path of the document in the window, the name and format of its timeline, a random installation identifier | Our feedback server, appsupport-gajv.onrender.com (hosted on Render, USA) |
| Generate | Only when you press Generate, or Test in Settings › AI | The prompt and the negative prompt, the length and the aspect of the video, the picture of the still you animate, and your own API key. Test sends the key alone | Google, through the Gemini API, under your own Google account (Test may also ask Google’s Vertex AI) |
| Music & Sounds | Only when you search, play a preview or import | The words you search for and the preview or file you choose; to Freesound and Jamendo, your own key for them | Freesound, Jamendo, Openverse or ccMixter, and the site that hosts an Openverse file |
| iCloud | Only if you turn on Sync documents with iCloud (off by default), when you save | The projects you save, a 320 px poster of each, small previews of the media they use (at most 12 frames of 320 px a file), the name of your Mac. Never the media themselves | Your own iCloud account (Apple CloudKit, private database), and the people you share a project with. We cannot read it |
| Check for Updates | Direct-download copy only: once a day, and when you choose Check for Updates… | A plain GET of the update feed. No personal data, no identifier | www.rainbowfactory.uk, this site, where the direct download lives |
| Editing, subtitles, export | — | Nothing: Transcribe Audio turns speech into subtitles with Apple’s on-device recognition, and editing, effects, colour and export run on your Mac | — |
The feedback chat lets you write to us from any window of Montage Pro. Nothing is sent until you send a message. When you do, the app posts it to our feedback server at https://appsupport-gajv.onrender.com, a service we run on Render (Render Services, Inc., United States). A message contains:
If you are offline, the message waits in a queue on your Mac (~/Library/Application Support/com.rf.montage/feedback-outbox/; for the Mac App Store copy, inside the app’s container) and is sent when the connection is back. Delete that folder and a waiting message is gone. The history of the messages you sent is kept in the app’s preferences, on your Mac.
Your Mac’s name is included so that several messages from the same Mac can be read together. There is no account and no e-mail address unless you type one in the message.
Generate makes a video from a prompt, or brings a still to life, with Google’s video model. It works with your own Google API key: you type it in Settings › AI, and Montage Pro keeps it in your login keychain, never in the project, the preferences or the log. Without a key, Generate is off and nothing is sent.
When you press Generate, the app sends Google’s Gemini API (generativelanguage.googleapis.com), with your key, the prompt and the negative prompt, the length and the aspect of the video and, to animate a still, its picture. Google sends back the video, which goes into your library. The request goes from your Mac straight to Google: Rainbow Factory has no server in this path and never sees your prompts, your pictures or your key. Google handles them under the terms and the privacy policy that apply to your Google account and to the Gemini API, which also decide whether and for how long Google keeps them.
Test, beside the key in Settings › AI, asks Google whether the key works without generating anything: it reads the list of models of the Gemini API and, when that refuses the key, of Google’s Vertex AI (aiplatform.googleapis.com). Only the key is sent.
Music & Sounds finds free music and sound effects for your film in four public libraries: Freesound, Jamendo, Openverse and ccMixter. When you search, the words you type go to the library you chose, through its public API; when you play a preview or import a track, the app fetches that file from the library (for Openverse, from the site that hosts the file, such as Wikimedia Commons). Nothing is fetched by itself: only what you search for, play or import.
Freesound and Jamendo need a key of your own: your Freesound API key and your Jamendo client ID, typed in Settings › Music and kept in the app’s preferences on your Mac. Each is sent only to its own service, with your requests; Openverse and ccMixter need none. Like any website, each service sees your IP address and handles your requests under its own privacy policy.
An imported track is saved in the Music folder you choose, with its licence and its credit line, and goes into your project.
Off by default. If you turn on Sync documents with iCloud, each project you save goes to the private database of your iCloud account, through Apple’s CloudKit (container iCloud.co.uk.rainbowfactoryltd.montage), and comes down to your other devices; File › Open from iCloud… lists them. It is stored by Apple, under Apple’s privacy policy; Rainbow Factory has no server in this path and cannot read what you store there.
What travels: the project file (.mpro), a 320 px poster, its name, length and format, the number of its clips and timelines, the names of the media files it uses, and the name of the Mac that saved it. With Keep online previews on (it is, unless you turn it off), at most 12 frames of 320 px of each video and still the project uses go with it, so that a project whose media are missing on another device still shows them. Your footage, music and pictures themselves are never uploaded.
File › Share… shares one project, through iCloud, with the people you invite, to view it or to edit it.
Turning Sync documents with iCloud off stops the sync. Deleting the app’s data from iCloud (System Settings › Apple Account › iCloud › Manage Storage) removes your projects from Apple’s servers.
The copy downloaded from this site updates itself with the open-source Sparkle framework: once a day, and when you choose Check for Updates…, it fetches https://www.rainbowfactory.uk/montage-pro/appcast.xml with a plain HTTP GET and compares the version in it with the one you have. The request carries no identifier and no system profile — Sparkle’s profile reporting is off. If you install an update, the app downloads the disk image from the same site and checks its signature against the key built into the copy you are running; anything that does not verify is refused. The Mac App Store copy has no update check of its own: updates come from the App Store under Apple’s terms.
Uninstalling the app does not delete these files; you can remove them yourself (~/Library/Application Support/com.rf.montage/, or the app’s container for the Mac App Store copy).
This site is static pages. It sets no cookies of its own, runs no analytics and embeds no advertising. Fonts are served from this site; no third party receives your requests. The disk image and the update feed of the direct-download copy are served from this site too. Links to Discord lead to that service and its policy. The hosting provider keeps ordinary server logs (IP address, requested page or file, time) for the operation of the service.
Data controller: RainbowFactory LTD (Rainbow Factory), London, United Kingdom. Registered office: 24 Fitzroy Square, London, England, W1T 6EP. Company number: 14629999. Contact: the feedback chat in Montage Pro — write to us there about the app or about your data. If you would like an answer, put in the message how we can reach you.
Why we process it. Feedback messages are processed because you send them, to answer you and to fix and improve the app (our legitimate interest). Generate and Music & Sounds requests go straight from your Mac to the services you choose, because you ask for them. Your iCloud data is processed by Apple on your behalf, because you turned the sync on. Update checks deliver the version you asked for. Nothing is used for advertising or profiling, and nothing is sold.
How long we keep it. Feedback messages: as long as the problem they describe is open, and at most 12 months. Rainbow Factory holds no copy of your Generate requests, your Music & Sounds searches or your iCloud data: Google, the music libraries and Apple keep them under their own terms, and your iCloud data stays until you delete it. The update feed is a public file.
Where. The feedback server runs on Render in the United States. iCloud data is stored by Apple and Generate requests are handled by Google, each under its own terms.
Your rights. Under the UK GDPR and, where it applies, the EU GDPR you can ask us what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, object to the processing, or complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office. For feedback, a request should mention the name of your Mac and roughly when you wrote, so that we can find your messages.
Children. The app is not directed at children and collects no personal data from anyone as part of normal use.
Changes. When the app gains or loses a network feature, this page changes with it, and the date at the top is updated.
