A useful detail

Do I need to import files into a separate library?

No. Lighthouse browses your existing folders and builds previews and a search index as you work.

A useful detail

Can I edit every file I can browse?

Preview and editing support are different. Lighthouse develops supported photos; documents such as PDF and SVG can be previewed and opened in an appropriate editor. Preview availability depends on the format and file.
