What it does

A video editor for your PC

Montage Pro for Windows has the timeline, the tools and the projects of Montage Pro, in a dark Windows window with Windows shortcuts. Start from the sample project in the welcome window: a trip through Yosemite, edited on the beat of its song.

The timelineAs many video, audio, subtitle, motion graphics and effects tracks as you need. Insert (F9), Overwrite (F10), Replace (F11), Place on Top (F12), Ripple Overwrite, Fit to Fill and Append; the Select, Trim, Live Trim, Position, Range, Blade, Slip, Slide, Zoom and Hand tools; roll and ripple edits, J, K and L, a two-up and four-up trim preview; compound clips and tracks, groups, tags and marks; several timelines in a project, in 1080p, UHD, 4K DCI, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5.
The library and the inspectorThe library holds the project’s media and timelines, in a grid you can skim or as a list; the clip view puts a source into the timeline. The inspector shows the timeline, the track, the clip, the text, the title or the effect in hand. Media that moved is found again with Relink.
Effects31 effects drawn by the graphics card — blurs, glow, vignette, Colour Control with wheels, curves, levels, chroma key, film grain, drop shadow, Snap Zoom, Lens Pass, Digital Zoom, Phone Mockup, B-roll Card — with ready-made looks such as Earthquake, Spotlight, Vertigo In and Pop Poster. Frame Escape, Magazine Cover, Dolly Zoom, Paper Cutout and Growth Curve cut out the person in the shot, on your PC.
TransitionsDissolve, dip to black or white, fade, sound crossfade, Zoom Through, Portal and Shatter, rendered in the background.
SoundA multitrack mixer with meters, volume and pan automation lanes and fades; EQ, compressor, limiter, gate, de-esser, reverb and delay; speed changes that keep the pitch. View › Music & Sounds searches open music and sound-effect libraries, each track with its licence shown.
ExportThe default is an MP4 with H.264; HEVC up to 10-bit HDR; ProRes 422 HQ, LT and 4444 with alpha. Stills in PNG and 16-bit TIFF, the soundtrack in WAV, FCPXML and EDL for a timeline. Renders run in the background while you edit.
On the beat

Let the music set the cuts

Timeline › Analyse Beats finds the beats of a song; View › Beat Grid shows them on the timeline, as downbeats, beats or finer divisions, and the magnet snaps to them.

Make Auto MontageSelect your clips and a song, choose Clip › Make Auto Montage, and the edit comes back cut on the beat. Its settings and presets decide how long a shot lasts and where it starts; Cut To and Explode Montage turn it into ordinary clips when you want to finish by hand.
By handCut here on the beat, on the half beat or on the frame; suppress a cut; anchor a shot. Clip › Cut at Beats splits a clip at the downbeats or at every beat; Conform to Beat Track fits clips to 1 to 96 beats; Replace Music keeps the rhythm with another song.
Titles and motion graphics

Words that move

The Titles browser has 32 templates — lower thirds, callouts, kinetic titles, checklists, badges and counters, title cards — with their texts and colours in the inspector.

Motion EditorOpen any title in the Motion Editor: text, shape, path, image and precomp layers, keyframes on a dope sheet and on curves, easing, text animated by character, word or line, text on a path, modifiers, 3D cameras, layer effects, feathered masks and motion blur. Track an object in the shot and pin a layer to it.
Your ownSave a design as a template and it joins the browser; Lottie animations play as motion graphics clips. Text clips, FX clips and AI Prompt Clips sit on the timeline beside them.
Stabilize

One button for shaky footage

Stabilization works from the gyro data the camera recorded, when it has some, and otherwise from the pictures themselves. The stabilized clip renders in the background; Timeline › Stabilize All Sources does a whole project.

Subtitles

Speech into captions

Timeline › Transcribe Audio turns what is said into subtitles, on your PC: the speech model is downloaded once, the first time, and nothing is sent anywhere. Edit them on their own track, add them by hand, and import or export SRT and WebVTT.

More

Colour, AI and automation

ColourWorking and output colour spaces, log footage from 17 cameras, LUTs in .cube and .3dl, HDR in PQ and HLG with tone mapping; Waveform, Vectorscope, Histogram and RGB Parade scopes; a Video Window that shows the picture alone on a second display.
GenerateTurn a still into a moving shot, or write a prompt in an AI Prompt Clip and get a video clip back. It uses your own Gemini API key, set in Edit › Preferences… › AI and kept in the Windows Credential Manager.
MCPAn AI assistant you set up yourself can read and edit your open projects through the Model Context Protocol: Edit › Preferences… › MCP shows the command (montagepro.exe --mcp-stdio) and registers it in Claude Code. It talks to the app on your PC only, through a local pipe.
Templates and the sampleNew Project in a format or from a template; Save as Template; the sample project, Yosemite AI Sample, in the welcome window and in Help › Open Sample Project. The first time it is copied into your Videos folder, so the original stays as it was.
Good to know

The Windows edition, said plainly

The same projects and the same commands. These are the differences.

Two editionsThe WinUI edition (the installer and the portable ZIP) has the menu bar in the title bar of the window; the Classic edition has the standard Windows menu bar and needs no extra runtime. Same code, same commands, same files; each one updates itself on its own line.
GraphicsVideo, effects and the interface are drawn by the graphics card through Direct3D 11, or Direct3D 12 where it is there. Without a graphics card that can do it — a virtual machine, for example — Montage Pro draws with the processor: everything works, more slowly.
CodecsH.264, HEVC and AAC go through Windows; HEVC needs the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store, and without them HEVC is greyed out with the reason. ProRes 422 and 4444 are read and written by Montage Pro’s own codec; MXF is read by Montage Pro itself. Opus plays where Windows has its decoder. DNxHD/HR is not read on Windows yet: such a clip says so instead of showing a black frame.
ProjectsA .mpro project opens on both sides and comes back as it left: what Windows does not use is kept. Projects and timelines from .montage, .beatshow and .fcpxml open as new timelines.
Not on WindowsCloud documents and sharing through the cloud are not part of the Windows edition; the offline previews of sources stay. Third-party video and audio plugins are not available yet: effects of that kind in a project are kept and said, not lost.
Menus and keysThe settings are in Edit › Preferences… (Ctrl+,); Check for Updates and Send Feedback are under Help. Ctrl takes the place of Command and Alt the place of Option; Exit is in the File menu (Alt+F4). A few keys change where Windows already uses them, and the menus show each one.

Windows version details

Version 27.0, build 1.

What’s new in 27.0The first Windows release of Montage Pro: the multitrack timeline, Auto Montage on the beat, titles and motion graphics, effects and transitions, colour and scopes, the mixer, subtitles, stabilization and export, in a WinUI and a Classic edition for x64 and ARM64.
RequirementsWindows 10 version 1809 or later, or Windows 11, on a 64-bit PC: x64 (Intel or AMD) or ARM64. A graphics card with Direct3D 11 or 12 recommended; without one the processor draws. 8 GB of memory, 16 GB recommended for 4K and HDR.
Windows App RuntimeThe installer and the portable ZIP use WinUI 3 and need the Windows App Runtime 1.8, a small Microsoft component: if it is missing it is installed automatically the first time. The Classic ZIP needs nothing.
OpensProjects .mpro, .montage, .beatshow; FCPXML 1.0 to 1.10 (.fcpxml, .fcpxmld); video MOV, MP4, M4V, MXF (H.264, HEVC, ProRes); audio WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC, FLAC, Opus; stills; subtitles SRT and WebVTT; LUTs .cube, .3dl; Lottie animations. R3D files are recognised but need RED’s own SDK, which is not included.
ExportsMP4 and MOV with H.264 or HEVC (Main 10 with HDR10), MOV with ProRes 422 HQ, LT or 4444 with alpha; PNG, 16-bit TIFF; WAV; FCPXML 1.10, EDL (CMX 3600), SRT and WebVTT; project templates.
LanguagesThe interface is in English in this first release. More languages come with an update.
SigningThe installer and the programs are signed by Rainbowfactory Ltd with an Azure Trusted Signing certificate.
UpdatesCopies from this site check for a new version, download it, verify its signature and install it when you agree; Help › Check for Updates… checks right away. The installer copy is updated through App Installer, each ZIP by itself, the Classic one on its own line. Nothing unsigned is installed.
PrivacyNo account and no usage analytics. Your projects and media stay on your PC. Something leaves the computer only for what you ask: a clip you generate with your own key, a search in Music & Sounds, the first download of the speech model, feedback you send, a crash report, and the update check. Details in the privacy policy.
Open sourceMontage Pro uses open-source components, among them ONNX Runtime, whisper.cpp, bgfx, NanoVG, miniaudio and libopus, and fonts under the SIL Open Font License. Their licences are in the licenses and fonts folders of the app.
