Choose a PDF task on Windows

Return a filled application, mark corrections on a draft, combine receipts for an expense claim or find a name in a scanned report.

AnnotateHighlight, underline and strike out that follow the words rather than a rectangle drawn near them; pencil and smoothed pen; rectangle, ellipse and line; text boxes in any font installed on the PC, embedded into the file; sticky notes with their bubbles; sound notes recorded from any microphone; Approved, Draft, Confidential and custom stamps; and an eraser that lights up the mark it is about to remove.

EditRewrite printed page text — type into it, change its typeface, size and colour — move and resize the page’s own objects, reorder them, recolour a solid fill, place an image, and draw links that go to a page or a web address.

Fill & SignThe Fill arrow lights the field under the pointer; Tab walks the document’s own order and Space ticks a box. Signatures are drawn, typed, taken from a photo of paper or from the webcam, kept in a library with initials and signer profiles, and dropped fitted to the space the form left for them — or placed on every signing spot in turn. File › Digitally Sign… signs with a real certificate from the Windows certificate store — a self-signed ID can be created on the spot — and every signed document is checked when you open it.

PagesReorder by dragging, duplicate, rotate, crop with a live preview, extract to a new PDF, merge another PDF in. Bates numbers, headers and footers, watermarks in three placements, and a bookmark tree you can edit.

Redaction & OCRTwo-stage redaction that really removes the text from the file, and text recognition, through the Windows OCR engine, that lays a searchable layer over a scan without touching the picture.

ColourRGB, CMYK, greyscale and named spot inks with their tints. The Swatches palette offers colours in the document’s own system, and the Separations palette shows the printing plates one at a time.

ExportPDF, PDF with compression (with the size and a before/after preview measured before anything is written), PNG, JPEG, TIFF, Word (.docx), print, and Share.

AI and MCPThe AI Console palette with four engines, and a built-in MCP server — stdio, and HTTP on the loopback address, port 8722 — with 33 tools, so Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex or VS Code can drive a document through the same code the buttons use.

Check the available tools for the job before starting. If a command is unavailable in this version, its tooltip explains the limit.

Text recognitionOCR uses the Windows OCR engine (Windows.Media.Ocr), so the languages it can read are the ones installed on your PC (Settings › Time & language › Language). Pages that already have real text are skipped and counted, and the picture is never touched.

EPS and PostScriptDo not open, and cannot be placed on a page. The command is there and says so: the only PostScript interpreter that could be shipped is licensed in a way we will not ship.

RTF and RTFDDo not open. Word documents (.docx) do — read by our own parser and laid out with DirectWrite, so a table arrives as paragraphs in sequence rather than a table, and the app says so when it opens one.

Photographing a signatureTake Photo… in the Signatures palette uses the PC’s webcam, and the shot goes through the paper-to-ink cleanup like a scanned one. With no camera attached the item is greyed with the reason.

Typed signaturesType Signature offers the handwriting faces installed on Windows. Present on a plain Windows 11: Gabriola, Segoe Script, Segoe Print, Ink Free. Nine more — Edwardian Script ITC, Palace Script MT, Kunstler Script, Vladimir Script, Monotype Corsiva, Brush Script MT, Lucida Handwriting, Freestyle Script, Mistral — appear as soon as Microsoft Office installs them. A face that is not installed is never offered.

PrintingGoes through XPS as real vectors — paths and glyphs, not a picture of the page — with a raster fallback at the printer’s own resolution when the vector path is refused. When it falls back it tells you; it never degrades in silence.

ShareUses the Windows Share contract, so the same picker other Windows apps use. It shares the saved PDF, or a PNG of the current page.

Digital signingIdentities come from the Windows certificate store (Personal), and the app can create a self-signed ID on the spot. Every signed document is checked when it opens, and clicking the signature badge shows the verdict on each signature.

MCP serverSpeaks both stdio and HTTP on the loopback address (port 8722 by default) and publishes 33 tools. There is no compare_page tool: it would check our rendering against the system’s PDF renderer, and Windows has none to compare against — asking for it by name gets that answer rather than a wrong picture. The MCP server works on its own document, not on the one in your window.

AI ConsoleFour engines. The transcript is drawn by the app itself rather than by a web view, so it keeps markdown, links and scrolling but you cannot drag-select the text out of it (copy the message instead). Your API key is encrypted with Windows DPAPI, never kept in the clear. Gemini answers an invalid key with HTTP 400, so that is the code you will see quoted back at you.

AutomationGoes through the MCP server, from any assistant that speaks it. There is no separate scripting interface.

Word exportLaid out with the same text engine the canvas draws with (DirectWrite and HarfBuzz), so line spacing is computed from the font’s own metrics and a font Word already has (Calibri, Cambria, Consolas) is passed through instead of being remapped.

TIFF exportOne file per page — never a single multi-page TIFF.

Dropping a signature imageA file dragged from Explorer onto the Signatures palette is added to the library. An image dragged out of another application — with no file behind it — is not: Windows hands a drop over as file paths.

Feedback buttonThe 💬 button on the canvas opens the Feedback palette. A file to send along goes in with the paperclip inside the palette; dropping it on the button does nothing.

Dropping a file on the pageA file dropped on the window opens as a document rather than being placed on the current page — and several images dropped together become one document, one page each, in name order. To put a picture on the page you are looking at, use File › Place….

PastingCtrl+V brings in objects you copied inside this application. Artwork pasted from another program is refused with the reason rather than arriving wrong; copying page text out to the clipboard works.

Form radio buttonsSpace ticks the checkbox under the keyboard focus. On a group of radio buttons it moves the focus rather than choosing the option: click the one you want, or use the Fill arrow.

One document at a timeThis build shows one document in one window. It remembers the section and the tool you last used — per launch rather than per window.

KeyboardCtrl, Alt and Shift throughout. Three commands are deliberately left without a chord rather than given a guessed one: Export with Compression… and Export Word (.docx)… (the Export ladder already uses every combination of Ctrl, Shift and Alt with E) and Paste In Front (Ctrl+F is Find). Use the available review, form, editing and page tools for the document in front of you. Unavailable commands remain disabled.

Rendering comparisonView › Rendering Test… and Automatic Rendering Test appear when you switch on the developer tools in Options › Debug, and stay greyed: they would compare our drawing against a system PDF renderer, and Windows has none.

Diagnostic log fileSend Logs Now and Reveal Log File in Options › Debug are greyed with the reason: this build keeps no session log. Crash reports are still collected and offered at the next launch.

Object grouping and lockingObject › Group, Ungroup, Lock and Unlock All are in the menu and greyed: a finished PDF page has no groups to make.

Assign Profile…In the menu and greyed: it is the app’s one permanent stub, kept so the menu reads whole.

Palettes that come to youThe Text palette does not come forward on its own when you select text or draw a text box, and the Edit palette does not park itself beside what you selected. Open them from the Window menu (Text is Ctrl+T).

Two small page and bookmark gesturesThe Pages sidebar has no right-click menu — the same commands are in the Pages palette’s ≡▾ menu — and a bookmark cannot be pointed at a new destination.

Combo boxes and spinners in the darkIn the dark theme a drop-down keeps a light arrow button, and so does a number spinner: the field and its text follow the theme, that little button is drawn by Windows itself.

Zoom in to read the small print, enter a page number to reach the right section and inspect the signature status on a received document. Place an image or stamp when the task calls for one.

And the things the app deliberately does not do: no password protection or encryption, no adding or deleting pages (reorder, rotate, duplicate, extract and merge, yes), no reshaping page objects point by point, no gradients or patterns on page objects, no re-flowing of printed text, and no SVG export.

RequirementsWindows 10 (version 1809) or Windows 11. The installer carries both builds, x64 for Intel and AMD PCs and ARM64 for Windows on ARM, and picks the right one.

DownloadOne signed installer for every PC: double-click the .msixbundle and Windows installs the right build, x64 or ARM64, without any SmartScreen warning, in the Start menu and registered for .pdf files.

Twelve languagesMenus, palettes, dialogs and the built-in help follow the language of your Windows: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. Change it any time in Preferences › General › Language.

One system componentThe window is built on WinUI 3 and needs the Windows App Runtime 1.8, a small framework Microsoft keeps up to date through the Store. On Windows 10 the window is opaque instead of translucent; everything else is the same. Most Windows 11 PCs already have it; if yours does not, the first launch opens the page to install it and the app starts right after. Nothing else: no other frameworks, no redistributables.

SigningSigned by Rainbowfactory Ltd with an Azure Trusted Signing certificate and timestamped, so Windows opens it without a SmartScreen warning.

EngineThe parser, the interpreter, the incremental-update writer and the renderer are Rainbow Factory’s own code, compiled natively for x64 and ARM64. No third-party PDF library sits underneath.

SavingYour changes are written onto the end of the original file: the bytes you started from stay untouched, a document you did not edit is byte-for-byte the file you opened, and an existing digital signature survives a Save. Save As and Export rebuild the file, and the app says so before it breaks one.

OpensPDF, and as a page you can view, annotate and export: PNG, JPEG, TIFF, GIF, BMP, HEIC/HEIF (best effort, through the codec Windows has installed), Photoshop (PSD, composite), SVG, Adobe Illustrator (AI) and Word (DOCX).

FontsUses the fonts installed on your PC, through DirectWrite. A font a document does not carry is substituted and the status bar says how many — it never pretends.

ColourRGB, CMYK, greyscale and named spot inks with their tints. A document opens in the colour mode it was made in, the Swatches palette offers colours in that system, and the Separations palette previews the real printing plates one at a time.

CanvasDrawn on Direct3D 12, with an automatic fallback to CPU rendering when no device is available.

MenusSeven menus: File, Edit, Layout, Object, View, Window and Help. About and Check for Updates… live under Help, Preferences… under Edit, Exit under File. A command this build cannot run sits in its place, greyed, so the whole application is always visible.

PalettesAll thirteen: Swatches, Text, Info, Pages, Separations, Bookmarks, Annotations, Signatures, Edit, Tags, Document Info, AI Console and Feedback, plus Performance behind the developer switch. Tab hides them all; each remembers where you left it.

MCP serverRun pdfeditor.exe --mcp-stdio, or switch on Allow external control in Options › MCP Server for the HTTP transport on 127.0.0.1:8722. The configuration to paste into your assistant is on that panel. The listener answers on the loopback address only.

FeedbackWindow › Feedback (Ctrl+Alt+F), the 💬 button on the canvas, or Help › Send Feedback…: text and screenshots go to our tracker, queued on disk when you are offline.

UpdatesThe direct download keeps itself up to date: it checks in the background, downloads the signed package, verifies the signature and installs it when you press the button. Help › Check for Updates… checks right away. Nothing unsigned is ever installed.

HelpPdf Editor Pro Help (F1), built from the app’s own menus and tools so it cannot go out of date, and Keyboard Shortcuts… with the full list.

PrivacyFree, with no in-app purchases and no account. Your documents are never uploaded. Nothing leaves the PC unless you send it: feedback you write, a crash report you agree to send, or a request you make of an AI engine — and on a PDF the AI request does not carry the document. There is no usage analytics of any kind in this version. The whole story, read from the code, is on the privacy page.
