What it does

A page layout app for your PC

Master Page for Windows has the commands, palettes and documents of Master Page, in a Windows window with Windows shortcuts.

Pages and mastersThe Pages palette, master pages with overrides, page sizes and orientation per page, sections, automatic page numbers, bleed and slug, rulers, guides and grids.
TypeText frames with columns and threading, the Character and Paragraph palettes, OpenType features, tabs, bullets and numbering, drop caps, text wrap, anchored objects, the Story Editor, Find/Change with GREP and the spelling checker.
StylesParagraph, character, object, table and cell styles with groups, overrides you can see and clear, and nested, line and GREP styles.
Images and linksPlace images, PDF and vector artwork, fit them in their frames, and keep track of them in the Links palette: update, relink, embed, edit the original. Layered PSD and TIFF place with their layers.
Objects and tablesDrawing tools, the pen, corner options, transform, align and distribute, layers, groups, and tables with merged cells, headers and footers. The Toolbox keeps Free Transform next to the rectangle and the Gradient Swatch and Gradient Feather tools in view; the Control palette along the window stays compact.
ColourSwatches, colour groups, tints and gradients, spot colours, CMYK with colour profiles, and PDF export in RGB or CMYK. The colour picker has seven tabs — Classic, Picker, LCH Studio, Harmonies, Universe, Shades and Libraries — in the colour dialog and in the Colors palette.
Long documentsBooks, tables of contents, an index, cross-references, hyperlinks, footnotes and text variables.
OutputExport to PDF, PNG, JPEG and TIFF, print with booklet imposition, check the document with Preflight and collect fonts and links with Package.
AutomationJavaScript scripts with a Scripts palette and a Script Console, an AI Console, and your own AI assistant can work on your layouts through masterpage.exe --mcp-stdio, if you set it up.
Windows touchesA welcome window at start with New, Open, your recent files and a sample to explore (Help › About brings it back), recent documents in the jump list, .idml files that open with a double-click, light and dark theme, and twelve interface languages.

The Windows edition, said plainly

The same documents and the same commands. These are the differences.

Two editionsThe WinUI edition (the installer and the portable ZIP) has the menu bar in the title bar of the window; the Classic edition has the standard Windows menu bar and needs no extra runtime. Same code, same commands, same files; each one updates itself on its own line.
GraphicsThe canvas is drawn by the graphics card through Direct3D 12 when the PC has it, and otherwise by the processor: every feature works either way. Choose in Edit › Preferences… › General › Graphics engine.
HelpHelp › Master Page Help (F1) and Help › Keyboard Shortcuts open pages on this website in your browser: the online Help and the keyboard shortcuts.
PrintingPrinting goes through the Windows print system, with Printer Properties and two-sided printing; the Print dialog has no preview. For press work, export a PDF.
Not on WindowsCloud documents and sync, Handoff and AppleScript belong to Apple systems and are not part of the Windows edition. Automation goes through scripts and the assistant connection instead.
Menus and keysPreferences are under Edit; About (the welcome window), Check for Updates and Send Feedback under Help. Ctrl takes the place of Command and Alt the place of Option; Exit is in the File menu.

What’s new in 26.15The first Windows release of Master Page, build 1: pages and master pages, threaded text, styles, tables, colour for print, long documents, PDF export and printing, on editable IDML files, in a WinUI and a Classic edition for x64 and ARM64. Since the test builds: the welcome window at start, the colour picker with seven tabs, Free Transform and the two gradient tools in view in the Toolbox, a compact Control palette and an app icon with rounded corners.
RequirementsWindows 10 version 1809 or later, or Windows 11, on a 64-bit PC: x64 (Intel or AMD) or ARM64. Graphics with Direct3D 12 recommended; without it the canvas is drawn by the processor. 8 GB of memory recommended for long documents.
Windows App RuntimeThe installer and the portable ZIP use WinUI 3 and need the Windows App Runtime 1.8, a small Microsoft component: if it is missing it is installed automatically the first time. The Classic ZIP needs nothing.
Opens and savesIDML documents and Master Page books (.mpbook); snippets (.idms). Places PDF, SVG, EPS, PSD, layered TIFF, PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP and HEIC; imports text from TXT, DOCX and EPUB. Exports PDF (RGB or CMYK), PNG, JPEG, TIFF and snippets.
LanguagesEnglish, Italian, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Dutch and Russian, following Windows or chosen in Preferences.
SigningThe installer and the programs are signed by Rainbowfactory Ltd with an Azure Trusted Signing certificate.
UpdatesCopies from this site check for a new version, download it, verify its signature and install it when you agree; Help › Check for Updates… checks right away. The installer copy is updated through App Installer, each ZIP by itself, the Classic one on its own line. Nothing unsigned is installed.
PrivacyFree, with no account and no usage analytics. Your documents stay on your PC. Something leaves the computer only for feedback you send, a crash report after a crash (this can be switched off), a request to the AI assistant and the update check. Details in the privacy policy.
