The five sections at the top

The red bar is the app in five moods. Pick one and the row underneath shows only the tools that belong to it — each with its own arrow, so the arrow in Annotate only ever touches your annotations and never the page underneath.

Also in the header: a button that shows or hides the Pages sidebar, a shortcut to Organize Pages, and the search field. Each window remembers which section you were in and which tool you last used there; the section you choose becomes the default for the next window you open.

The bar at the bottom

• An editable zoom percentage with presets from 6 % to 1600 %.
• A page counter.
• A status readout you can switch between the current tool, the canvas size, the number of undo steps and the zoom level.
• A "N fonts substituted" badge when the document uses fonts that were not embedded in it: those are shown with system typefaces, and the badge says so.
• A badge when the document carries a certificate signature — and the app actually checks it: Signed when it verifies, Signed · unknown signer when the certificate cannot be traced to a known authority (the normal state of a self-signed ID), Changed since signing when the document was altered after it was signed. Click the badge for the verdict on each signature. It also tells you the honest truth: Save keeps a signature valid, while Save As and Export rebuild the file and break it.
